Billy Corgan and Nick Cave: Back when Smashing Pumpkins were fresh and new and Billy Corgan had hair, he was tasked with interviewing Nick Cave for MTV. It starts off well enough, until Corgan opts to declare the Bad Seeds an English band, and Cave closes the exchange with a withering, "You have the mentality of a teenager". Must have stung.
Pete Doherty: We're not sure what he expected, but even Pete Doherty couldn't have anticipated the uncomfortable bombardment of personal questions that swamped his Late Late Show appearance. Host Pat Kenny displayed a complete disregard for his music, despite Doherty's pleas, and an interrogation revolving around his drug use and famous girlfriend led to the singer literally hiding under his hat to escape. This one's a hard watch.
The Bee Gees: Their appearance on Clive Anderson's chat show in 1997 is infamous - in that the trio didn't stick around for long. After bringing up their previous name, Les Tossers, the band head for the exit, although not before referring to Anderson himself as a "tosser".
Rivers Cuomo: If reports are to be believed, Weezer had literally just touched down in Australia, as a bleary-eyed Rivers Cuomo perched on ABC TV's Recovery sofa. Barely able to string a sentence together and monotone in response, the interviewer jokes, "I couldn't tell" when Cuomo explains that he's jet lagged. You could at least pronounce his name right though.
Kanye West: A list wouldn't be complete without Kanye, and he doesn't so much deliver an awkward exchange with Sway on his "RapFix Live" radio show than transport us on a delirious rollercoaster of emotions. What begins as a pretty standard conversation between the pair descends into West's frustrations at the fashion industry bubbling over, prompting him to scream "You ain't got the answers man! You ain't got the answers. I've been doing this more than you. You ain't got the answers". By its close, however, they kiss and make up, with Kanye declaring that he loves Sway. Phew, we're just trying to catch our breath back.
The Kooks: This one had to be on the list, as Simon Amstell gleefully revels in having The Kooks sat before him with no escape, sifting through subjects such as their stage school past and famous ex girlfriends (the quote here is a reference to Pritchard's former girlfriend Katie Melua). Thankfully, the pair appear to be taking the ribbing in good humour, despite initially crumbling.
Blur: This one's not so much awkward, just deeply uncomfortable viewing. Back in 1996, Blur were confronted with the incessant chirpiness of Nardwuar and, instead of embracing the weirdness, they proceeded to hassle and intimidate the interviewer, even knocking his hat and questions to the floor. Drummer Dave Rowntree offered an apology for his "bullying" in 2011, citing a cocaine addiction as the reason for his unacceptable behaviour. Other artists that have reacted with disdain to Nardwuar's cajoling include Sonic Youth, Kid Cudi and Nas.
Arctic Monkeys: Alex Turner is well known for his languorous persona, but even he seems bemused by the line of questioning that him and Matt Helders encounter while in conversation backstage at Lollapalooza last year. If inquiring as to what the pair's penises might taste like isn't bizarre enough, Turner and Helders are also quizzed on how to clean vomit from a driveway and, in classic rockstar stereotype, whether the frontman is drunk. "No...it's the just way my face falls", he deadpans.
Sex Pistols: Arguably one of the most famous altercations on live TV happened between the Sex Pistols and Bill Grundy back in 1976. Although it carried a whiff of inevitability, the band made headlines by swearing on live television and labelled the beloved host a "fucking rotter".
Justin Bieber: What happened to the angelic cherub that warmed our hearts back in 2009? By the time of this radio interview, Justin Bieber was 18 and, in his head, a serious musician that responded with indignation when compared to another artist. When one interviewer asks whether Bieber is concerned about Harry Styles meeting his mother, he replies: "I think you should worry about me and your mum, bro". He quickly hangs up, surely pleased with himself, although not before the presenter informs Biebs that his mother is in fact dead. Oh.
S Club 7: While S Club 7 were clearly media trained within an inch of their lives to ensure that an awkward interview never happened, it wasn't the group that took offence to a particular question. Instead, the band's PR juggernaut halts proceedings by shouting off camera, as Claudia Winkleman discusses rumours that S Club have earned barely any cash from their superstardom. "We didn't get a mint, I would love a mint right now, for my breath", Bradley quips, before chaos ensues.
Killswitch Engage: Before you interview Killswitch Engage, make sure you do your research. Despite insisting that he owns two of their albums, this interviewer is shut down by the hysterical laughter of the band due to his countless misinformation and incorrect facts. A "Pantera rip off" quip is the only parting shot that he manages to send their way.
Gene Simmons: We find Kiss bassist Gene Simmons in not very rock 'n' roll surroundings on an American chat show, discussing his rocky love life alongside partner of 28 years, Shannon Tweed. It's not going well, we'd assume, as Tweed pulls off Simmons' glasses, brands him a pig and gives him a swift push as she storms off, all in response to his admission of cheating. Live television at its most intense.
Tyler The Creator: There was a point when you felt like you couldn't get away from Tyler The Creator and his Odd Future cronies, but, just as popularity was swelling, an interview with Tim Westwood was scheduled. What follows is almost seven minutes of ridicule and plenty of awkward glances off camera, especially when Westwood confronts Tyler's sizeable big toe. Surprisingly, the collective returned for a second interview two years later, presumably to enjoy another laugh at the presenter's expense.
John Lydon: not one to shy away from controversy, John Lydon took issue with an Australian news anchor cutting him off on live television - and shocked viewers by embarking on a disgusting sexist rant. After repeated calls for her to "shut up", Lydon tells her "when a man is talking, do not interrupt". Despite stunned silence from the studio, nobody gives him the response he deserves. Shame.
