Here are eight music videos that have whipped the general public into a controversial frenzy this year.
Taylor Swift - 'Wildest Dreams': Featuring the singer as a colonial era actress who embarks on a rocky romance while filming a movie in an African location, the video boasts Savanna backdrops and wildlife, but very few people of African origin in shot. Lauren Duca wrote that with this video, Swift is "embodying the political exploitation of a region and its people."
The Weeknd - 'Tell Your Friends': A fleeting image of Abel Tesfaye singing with a plastic bag over his head as he's buried alive is visually arresting, staying with the viewer long after the last frame jolts away.
Miley Cyrus - 'Dooo It!' Consisting of rapidly cut, extreme close ups of Miley's face as she dribbles glitter and smears various gooey sweets all over her face, the video is an undeniably difficult watch. The most controversial moment occurs when the singer takes a shower of milk to the face. Is it a social statement or just another offering of shock value? You decide.
Tyga: 'Stimulated': The video for Tyga’s controversial song features he and Kylie Jenner getting up close and personal with some pretty disturbing lyrics. Tyga raps, "They say she young, I should've waited / She a big girl, dog, when she stimulated." The legal age of consent in Los Angeles is 18, the song implying that Tyga may have broken the law with Kylie Jenner.
Sia - 'Elastic Heart': This captivating video of Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler engaging in a ballet inspired, steel cage match created controversy amongst critics. Many argued that the physicality of the choreography between an adult and a minor was inappropriate.
Rihanna - 'Bitch Better Have My Money': This seven minute revenge flick contains all the hallmarks of controversy. Violence, nudity, bad language, a spot of kidnapping and a revealing final shot of a blood soaked Rihanna. It was accused of 'glorifying rape culture'.
Mini Mansions Feat. Alex Turner - 'Vertigo': Combining strange, religious imagery with semi naked women against a stark, white backdrop, some described this raunchy video as the 'artsy' equivalent of the heavily discussed 'Blurred Lines'. We thought it was pretty innocent though .
Chvrches - 'Leave A Trace': Far from controversial in its content, it's perfectly innocent and pretty damn good, but the reaction to it from many an idiot whipped up a storm - culminating in a 4Chan thread that accused the band of 'oversexualising' singer Lauren Mayberry and putting her at the forefront of the other two male members. The idiocy of 4Chan did not go unnoticed, with Mayberry replying 'this is what misogyny looks like - apparently having wet hair makes you a slut'.
