Doomsday is upon us: a meteor the size of China is hurtling towards our atmosphere with a momentum that's going rip through our dinky little planet like a bullet through a wet tissue. You can listen to one song before it all goes black, what will it be? Here are Reddit's picks.
Muse - 'Apocalypse Please' (tonirali): "The sense of urgency would fit perfectly in the end of the world, it also helps that the lyrics contain the phrase 'this is the end of the world'".
The Doors - 'The End' (robertobaz): "This is the end, my only friend, the end / Of our elaborate plans, the end / Of everything that stands, the end".
Led Zeppelin - 'Kashmir' (Croixian1): If you want to go out moving and shaking, this is the track to burn up to. Other Zeppelin suggestions included 'When The Levee Breaks' and 'In My Time Of Dying' - the last one especially.
Louis Armstrong - 'What A Wonderful World' (RetroJester1): "For two reasons: irony, and, it'd give one last hit of nostalgia while starkly contrasting with my current surroundings."
Buddy Holly - 'Everyday' (xxtoejamfootballxx): "Everyday it's a gettin' closer / Goin' faster than a roller coaster / Love like yours will surely come my way". In this instance, 'love' is a euphemism for the moon sized comet moving at over 25,000 mph. So yes, faster than a roller coaster.
R.E.M - 'It's The End of the World as We Know It' (buygonetimes): "This is what I listened to the last time my world ended." There's obvious a complicated story behind this one.
Sufjan Stevens - 'Fourth Of July' (Chaosparty): Listening to the bleak admission of inevitable death would be the most miserable way to go out but among the morose sparseness of the track there is an underlying beauty.
Kanye West - 'Lost In The World' (Sharwinzaz): There's a Kanye track for every occasion, even the apocalypse. An actually humble Kanye is miracle enough to restore hope that all is not lost, combined with the beautiful vocals of Justin Vernon, this might be the most apt apocalypse song - even if it has nothing to do with it.
Godspeed You, Black Emperor - 'East Hastings' (Knightwing890): Described as a "Transgalactic brainfucking interstellar orgasm", this post-rock masterpiece would be a way to disintegrate lost in your own thoughts rather than distracted by sentimental lyrics.
Death Cab For Cutie - 'I Will Follow You into The Dark' (Cajunbindlestiff): Not the most brazen choice but definitely one if you're spending the last minutes of earth with a loved one. Although, it won't be so much as 'following' as it will be everyone heading into the dark at the same times so at least you won't be lonely.
Alexisonfire - 'This Could Be Anywhere In The World' (Jwsbtccfan): "The sky's a brick wall, the ground's a juggernaut / Each day they get a bit closer / Between them I am caught" Swap 'day' for 'minute' and then you're on the right lines.
The Notorious B.I.G - 'Suicidal Thoughts' (Sfanburg): One for all those dying with regrets but going out in style, "When I die, fuck it, I wanna go to hell / Cause I'm a piece of shit, it ain't hard to fucking tell /It don't make sense, going to heaven with the goodie-goodies / Dressed in white, I like black Timbs and black hoodies.
Pink Floyd - 'Goodbye Cruel World' (Jody_Foster_Army): Pretty self explanatory, this one.
Radiohead - '4 Minute Warning' (Gyrocopter_77): Thom Yorke described this In Rainbows tune being "about the fucking panic of realising you%u2019re going to die!%u201D. The narrator is caught in the midst of the pandomonium and just looking for somewhere to hide, is that how you would deal with the situation?
Ylvis - The Fox (Eldeeder): "Because fuck you, that's why."
