Jacques Dutronc: He has the best jangly 60s Rolling Stones-esque sound and remains one of the great songwriters of all time, not just in France but anywhere.
Edith Piaf: The cabaret singer, songwriter and actress is one of France's greatest stars. She's quintessential listening for anyone looking to tap into the cultural fabric of the country.
Justice: Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best live bands in the world. Their electro house incorporates arena shaking rock, indie and metal hooks to stunning effect.
La Femme: A genre-smashing journey of krautrock, postpunk, psych and total insanity. They may be from France, but their music knows no borders.
Petite Meller: Petite Meller is one of Island Records' newest signings and she is tipped for the top in 2016 after proving she can produce hit records and play an absorbing show with the support of her incredible live band. We found out firsthand when she headlined out Gigwise Presents night at XOYO.
Serge Gainsbourg: He's like the Elvis of France, deep voice and hair-raisingly beautiful songs. A national treasure and deservedly so.
Ultan Bator: This krautrock inspired post rock outfit have a really unpolished sound that reflects the sound of band playing live in a room together. It's experimental, weird , and a refreshing change from the more corporately aimed pop that gains the limelight in France.
Yann Tiersen: He's most noted for writing the sublime sound track to the quintessential French film Amelie. However, he's a stunning live performer in his own right and has a huge cult following who adore his every stroke on that bow.
Francois and the Atlas Mountains: One of our favourite new bands on this list. Their odd ball pop is incredibly catchy and the melodies are a dream to listen to.
Savages: Lead singer Jenny Beth is French, so we couldn't ignore these poetic post-punk innovators. Totally fearless and exquisite in their controlled madness, their 2013 debut album has been a constant on our stereo. Thankfully their new album Adore Life is on the way so we can play that one to death too.
Brigitte Bargot: She's one of the best known sex symbols of the '50s and '60s, and her every moment drips with sex, romance and everything French.
Manu Chao: If there's one band that should come to the U.K to play some shows soon then it's this one. They're absolutely incredible live and it's a shame we don't see more of them. Their hybrid music that has shades of Latin/ska/ reggae/ rock is about as good as music gets to party to.
Daft Punk: They may or may not be human, but their impact on the world of dance will keep mankind dancing for centuries to come.
Air: Sensual electro that just drips with class. What could be more French than that?
Herman Dune: One of the finest indie rock guitar bands in France without a doubt. The singer has now formed a band under the name Black Yaya but Herman Dune's material is so rich and deserves to be heard everywhere.
M83: One of the finest electronic acts in the world. A live phenomenon.
Nouvelle Vague: Bossa Nova delicacies of popular songs and great original material.
Sebastien Tellier: A wild character on stage, when we saw him live he was tripping on acid and drinking copious amounts of red wine. It made it all the more entertaining if anything as he played through his impeccable back catalogue. 'La Ritournelle' is a particular favourite.
Phoenix: A dance-rock crossover, one of the most insane gig experiences on the planet, and it's impossible not to fall instantly in love with them.
