David Bowie - Pin Ups:
A collection of Bowie's favourite songs from 1964 - 67. There's covers of Pink Floyd, The Kinks, The Who, and The Pretty Things - as well as more obscure bands like the short lived Australian band Easybeats. The Thin White Duke always had good taste.
Beck - Kick:
Beck covered INXS's 1987 album Kick with Liars, St. Vincent and Sergio from Os Mutantes. They released one track at a time and filmed the whole process. Beck, as ever, gives an incredible performance.
The Byrds Play Dylan:
This is a collection of Byrds playing Dylan at different stages in their career. Although it didn't chart when it was originally released in 1979, nor when the reissue came out in 2002, it's an incredible way of experiencing Dylan's lyrics thanks to the beautiful harmonies and astonishing guitar tones.
Cat Power - The Covers Record: Cat Power's beautiful voice makes for great covers of everything from The Rolling Stones' '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', to traditional folk song 'Salty Dog', as well as '50s song 'Sea Of Love'. Despite the diverse material, the album plays like one of Cat Power's own records, because she makes the songs completely her own by stripping back the arrangements and revealing the delicate beauty in all of them.
Deftones - Covers: A heavy metal band covering The Smiths, The Cardigans, and The Cure is a surprising thing, but Deftones have done it brilliantly. The songs that made this album were recorded over many years. The band used to record covers after finishing album recording, and the songs on Covers span their entire career. The earliest recording was their cover of 'Simple Man' by Lynyrd Skynyrd which was recorded by Chino when he was 17, meaning it was before the band even released their debut album. Covers was released especially for Records Store Day on 16 April 2011.
Easy Star All Stars - Dub Side Of The Moon:
The only reggae Pink Floyd album you'll ever need. It's impossible to imagine another album capturing the beauty of the original recordings but totally reworking it into a dub band. They even managed to perform at Glastonbury after also releasing Radiodread and East Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band
John Lennon - Rock n' Roll:
This pays homage to late 50s and early 60s classic's such as Ben E King's 'Stand By Me' and 'Peggy Sue' by Buddy Holly. It's a great introduction to a lot of music that pre-dated The Beatles, and helps understand John Lennon's direction as an artist/musician.
Mark Lanegan - Imitations:
Pour yourself a large glass of red, sink into your sofa and be whisked away in awe at the fragile beauty on display here. There's covers of 'You Only Live Twice' originally performed by Nancy Sinatra and penned by Leslie Bricusse and John Barry for the Bond flick of the same name. Another highlight is Lanegan's take on 'Deepest Shade' an outtake from The Twilight Singers' first album sessions. The songs reflect music Lanegan grew up hearing at his childhood home.
Metallica - Garage Inc:
Their cover of 'Whiskey In The Jar' easily rivals or even surpasses the quality of the original by Thin Lizzy. There are so many other golden moments on here to ensure that Garage Inc is firmly one of the great covers albums. Their cover of Sabbath's 'Sabbra Cadabbra' gets given justice too. What an album!
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around:
His cover of N.I.N 'Hurt' will go down in history as one of the most incredible performances by a man with a guitar ever. The other stand out, 'I Hung My Head' is sung with the same aching beauty that makes this album one of Johnny Cash's finest.
Nick Cave - Kicking Against The Pricks:
There's a mixture of blues standards, traditional Southern tunes, country gothic with themes of murder and vengeance. The album title isn't what it seems, it's taken from the Bible and refers to an ox kicking against the spiked rod used to drive it.
Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague:
Their Bossanova covers of punk and new Wave songs were a charming presence in the mid 00s. Their cover of Dead Kennedy's 'Too Drunk To Fuck', Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and XTC's 'Making Plans For Nigel' are highlights of a tasteful set.
Patti Smith - 12:
The 12 tracks here cover some of the very best songs of the 60s/70s/80s and 90s. They include songs by Hendrix, Neil Young, R.E.M, and Nirvana. It's a very cool list, and an album well worth a listen.
Peggy Sue Play The Songs of Scorpio Rising:
This Brighton-based indie folk band released this set of covers of every song on the soundtrack to the 1963 Kenneth Anger film Scorpio Rising. The idea came about after the band were invited to play a live soundtrack to the film at a showing in Hackney. They then decided to record the songs they played, which included 'Fools Rush In' by Johnny Mercer and Rube Bloom, and 'Blue Velvet' by Bobby Vinton.
Rage Against The Machine - Renegades:
Rage made this so much their own that you'd be forgiven for thinking these weren't covers at all. Their covers of 'Kick out The Jams' by MC5 and Bob Dylan's 'Maggie's Farm' are just a couple of highlights from this absolute classic.
