Weightless: When Rooney Mara got on stage with The Black Lips at Austin City Limits back in 2012, accompanied by a camera crew and a guitar which didn't seem to be plugged in, no-one really understood what was going on. Over three years later, the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. Mara was shooting a scene for Terrence Malick's new film, which also features Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling. There's no release date yet, but we do know it's about "obsession and betrayal, set against the music scene in Austin, Texas."
I Saw The Light: Starring Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, I Saw The Light tells the story of country music singer Hank Williams, his stratospheric rise to fame, and his sudden death at the age of 29. We're hoping this is the film that'll see Elizabeth Olsen live up to the incredible potential she showed in her debut film, Martha Marcy May Marlene.
Blood Orange: The Ibiza-set thriller starrs Iggy Pop as a rock 'n roll legend with a much younger wife, whose idyllic lifestyle is rudely interrupted by his wife's vengeful ex-boyfriend. It's scheduled for release in April or May, to coincide with Iggy's world tour.
The Beatles Live!: Ron Howard's forthcoming documentary follows the biggest band to have ever existed during their touring years, uncovering previously unseen material. "We are going to be able to take the Super 8 footage that we found, that was all shot silent," says Ron Howard. "Well not only be able to digitally repair a lot of that, but weve also been finding the original recordings. We can now sync it up and create a concert experience so immersive and so engaging, I believe youre going to actually feel like youre somewhere in the Sixties"
Florence Foster Jenkins: If you're unfamiliar with Foster Jenkins' opera career, we urge you to YouTube 'Florence Jenkins massacres Mozart'. It's the most endearingly awful performance you'll have heard since the first round of X Factor auditions. Jenkins was a New York socialite who, despite having no pitch, rhythm or tonal ability, was convinced of her own talent and became a wildly popular opera singer in the early 20th century. In Stephen Frears' biopic, she'll be played by Meryl Streep (of course), with Hugh Grant also set to star.
Basmati Blues: From Short Term 12 to Room, Brie Larson is yet to put a foot wrong in her career. So we're both excited and intrigued by the prospect of her next career move - a musical, in which she plays a scientist sent to India to sell genetically modified rice to rural farmers. "I sing and dance and play guitar and do all the things," she said in an interview. Brie Larson doing all the things? We're sold.
Sing Street: With a soundtrack that includes The Cure, Duran Duran, The Police and Genesis, Sing Street is set in '80s dublin, and tells the story of a boy thrust into public education after his parents can no longer affort his private school tuition fees, who starts a band to impress a girl. It's got a relatively unknown cast, but looks extremely promising.
Gutterdammerung: There's a newfound poignancy to this black and white silent film - one of its stars, Motorhead's Lemmy, passed away at the end of last year. What a thing to leave behind though. With a cast that includes Henry Rollins, Grace Jones, Slash, Iggy Pop and Josh Homme, Gutterdammerung is a silent film with a heavy rock score, and tells the story of a "punk angel sent to earth to test humanity and set the world on fire."
Sing: Son Of Rambow director Garth Jennings helms this animated musical about a punk-rock porcupine, voiced by Scarlett Johanssen (who's already dabbled in the world of music in the form of an unfairly derided album), a dapper Koala, voiced by Matthew 'alright alright alright' McConnaughey and an overtaxed pig mother, played by Reese Witherspoon. What more could you possibly need?
Michael Jackson's Journey From Motown To Off The Wall: Spike Lee's documentary comprises archival footage of Jackson and interviews with his contemporaries and family members, as well his present day successors such as The Weeknd, Questlove, Mark Ronson and John Legend, to chronicle his rise to fame.
La La Land: As you might have already guessed, La La Land is set in modern-day Los Angeles, and chronicles the relationship between a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling, in his second appearance in this list) and an actress (Emma Stone). It's directed by Damien Chazelle, who's responsible for the incredible drumming drama Whiplash, and John Legend's got a role too.
The Dust Storm: You probably haven't heard of the cast of The Dust Storm - apart from perhaps, if you're a Parks & Recreation fan, Jim O'Heir - but it looks like a potentially sweet drama about a broken Nashville musician who finds himself reunited with the girl who "crushed his heart" a decade ago.
