Muse - Origin Of Symmetry: Most of the album was recorded while the band were high on Magic Mushrooms - which might explain why Matt Bellamy decided to sample his fly being zipped and unzipped on 'Space Dementia'.
The Beatles - Rubber Soul: The warped angle of the artwork was an accidental stroke of genius. When photographer Robert Freeman was showing the band the slides from the photo shoot, he was projecting them onto a piece of cardboard. “We had just chosen the photograph,” says Paul McCartney, “when the cardboard fell backwards a little, elongating it. We went, ‘Can you do it like that?’"
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed: The cake part of the strange, clock dial / car tyre / cake structure on the album’s artwork was made by Delia Smith in 1969 - when she was a 28 year old, completely unknown cookery writer.
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence: This won’t come as a surprise to fans of the book, but the title of Del Rey’s second album is lifted from Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, and has come to refer to excessive, unjustified and aesthetic violence.
The Velvet Undergound - The Velvet Underground & Nico: The album’s iconic artwork featured a peelable banana - a genius but time-consuming gimmick. Andy Warhol’s artistic director explained, "Someone had to sit there with piles of albums, peel off the yellow banana skin stickers and place them over the pink fruit by hand. Eventually, the peelable banana was dropped, and originals are now worth a tidy sum.
Happy Mondays - Yes Please: While the band were recording the album at reggae star Eddy Grant’s studio in Barbados, label boss Tony Wilson heard rumours that their crack use was spiralling out of control. He promptly flew to Barbados to sort things out, and later claimed that as his plane was coming into land, he saw Shaun Ryder and Bez wheeling one of Eddy Grant’s sofas down the road to trade for drugs.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures: The album’s producer, Martin Hannett, became obsessed with capturing the right drum sound. During one recording sessions, he had drummer Stephen Morris take apart his drum kit and reassemble it to include parts from a toilet. During another, he had him set up his kit on top of a roof to improve the sound.
The Libertines - Up The Bracket: The album was recorded almost entirely live - meaning they didn’t record each instrument layer by layer. This was, and still is, a very unusual way of recording an album, and contributed to its distinct, DIY sound.
Radiohead - Kid A: The album was heavily influenced by Naomi Klein’s anti-corporate book No Logo. In fact, they considered calling it No Logo for some time, and recommended the book to fans on their website.
Arcade Fire - Reflektor: David Bowie’s contribution to the album’s title track came about by accident. Bowie was hanging out at the New York studio while the band recorded, fell in love with the song, and asked if he could do backing vocals. In fact, he told the band, “If you don’t hurry up and mix this song, I might just still it from you.”
