10 stunning photos of Jaga Jazzist at The Roundhouse, London, 27/1/17
The best live set of the year so far
Few gigs are a marvel like this one. Jaga Jazzist are, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary live bands on the planet. Signed to Ninja Tune, the band have a mutant jazz sound that is completely beguiling.
The band come from Norway and it's their 14th London show and from the crowd’s reaction I get the sense those who got tickets had been before because once you've seen them there's no going back - you'll have to see the next gig. When the band exit the stage before the encore, there's a standing ovation that brings out goosebumps because there's a collective sense that the best band ever just gave their hearts and souls. Sonically they fuse jazz with instrumental rock, ambient electronica, and techno and the lack of orthodoxy it's easy to see why they're one of Mars Volta's favourite bands.
Knowing they're from Norway, it's hard not to draw parallels between the eerie mystical fog covered Fjords and their sumptuous entirely anolog, entirely organic instrumentation. The drummer is the toastmaster and like Badbadnotgood has jazzy tekkas that keeps things sparky. When's the next gig?
