John Travolta was turned away from a branch of KFC in East Grinstead after he tried to book a table at the restaurant.
Staff at the London Road branch thought they had received a prank phone call when Travolta called to request a table in his name.
He was informed that the restaurant did not take bookings, and that the Grease star would have to join the back of the queue like everyone else.
Much to the fried chicken franchise's embarassment, it turned out that the star was indeed in town, attending a gala charity event held last weekend (Oct 15).
A spokesman for KFC told ThisisSussex.co.uk: "In hindsight, of course, we would have reserved a table for him.
"It's not every day you get a Hollywood star eating in your restaurant. I have heard he pops into East Grinstead every year."
Tom Cruise was also in town for the event, held by the controversial Church of Scientology.
The employee who took the call, wishing not to be named, said: "To me, customers are customers, no matter who they are. It doesn't make a difference (if someone is famous).
"The lady who called didn't give me her name, she just said it will be for a Mr Travolta.
"That threw me a little bit. I thought it might be a load of nonsense, but she seemed pretty serious."
A guest at the event told the Courier & Observer: "John Travolta was at the dinner on Saturday night, but not at the concert on Sunday.
"He's very sociable, but because it was a formal dinner, he was given his space."
Travolta is to shoot scenes for The Expendables 2, alongside a host of 1980's action heroes, later this year.
