Underoath: The Christian metalcore band may have announced they were calling it quits in 2012, but the band didn't go their separate ways until this year, playing their last show on 26 January 2013. Lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain said it was "heartbreaking for all of us but all good things must come to an end."
The Mars Volta: The Texan rock band split this year after twelve years of being together. In January, Cedric Bixler-Zavala posted on Twitter to inform fans, saying, " I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of. We could never had done it without you."
My Chemical Romance: The band had been at the centre of sensationalism for a while, but officially announced their split in March 2013. Writing on their website, My Chemical Romance said, "Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We've gotten to go places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We've shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure."
Swedish House Mafia: Despite announcing their split in 2012, Swedish House Mafia played their last concert on 24 March 2013 at the Ultra Music Festival. They said about the break-up, "Today we want to share with you, that the tour we are about to go on will be our last. We want to thank every single one of you that came with us on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved."
Streetlight Manifesto: While insistent that they're not actually breaking up, Streetlight Manifesto announced this year that they are "turning the last page of this particular chapter of our lives." This means that they are planning on touring a lot less, saying on their website, "We are done being a full-time touring band, but not done as a band."
S.C.U.M.: Best known for featuring Thomas Cohen - married to Peaches Geldof - S.C.U.M. announced their break-up in January via a post on their Facebook. The band said, "Hello everyone, It seems an appropriate time to announce after a long hiatus - S.C.U.M have collectively decided that we will no longer play or continue to write together.
We'd all like to thank you for all of your support but we have chosen to part ways and work on new projects. See you all very soon."
The Postal Service: Despite teasing fans earlier in 2013 with new tracks 'Tattered Line Of String' and 'Turn Around', it's all over for The Postal Service, who have called time on their time together. Ben Gibbard announced the band's end on Twitter, writing: "Hey Chicago, these @PostalService shows at Lollapalooza and Metro will be our very last. Please come celebrate with us!"
Lostprophets: After 16 years of international success, the Welsh band split in September 2013 after frontman Ian Watkins was arrested on child sex charges. "To our fans: After nearly a year of coming to terms with our heartache, we finally feel ready to announce publicly what we have thought privately for some time," they said. "We can no longer continue making or performing music as Lostprophets. Your love and support over the past 15 years has been tremendous, and we'll be forever grateful for all you've given us. As we look forward to the next phase of our lives."
Asobi Seksu: The New York shoegaze stars bid farewell to fans in September 2013, after 11 years and four critically acclaimed album. "Thanks for all the memories guys," they wrote on their official Facebook page." Hope to make more down the line. We miss you all." They later added: "Truly thankful for all of you and for 11 amazing years. Some of you say that we got you through tough times or that we soundtracked some special moments...You have no idea what that means to us. We love Asobi too. We will miss it too. Xoxo"
Tribes: Tribes: The Camden based band called time on their career on 7 November 2013, thanking fans on Facebook for their support during their four years together. "We are sad to announce that we will no longer be writing and performing together as Tribes. Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way. We are proud of what we achieved together. You gave us the best four years of our lives so far."
Jonas Brothers. First they cancelled a 19 date tour, then the siblings announced that they were splitting for good - sorry, "closing a chapter." Nick Jonas said of the split "I was feeling kind of trapped. I needed to share my heart with my brothers." How nauseating.
The Temper Trap. Guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto left the band "with a heavy heart" in October. The band stated "While we're sad to lose a guitarist, we are not losing a friend." Interpret that as you wish.
Pixies. After Kim Deal quit earlier this year, Pixies replaced her with Kim Shattuck, perhaps in the hopes that hiring someone with the same name would ease the pain. It didn't, so they fired her. "I would have preferred if they told me face to face" said Shattuck in an admirable restrained interview.
Slipknot. The most recent of the lot is drummer Joey Jordison's departure from Slipknot. "It is with great pain but quiet respect, that for personal reasons Joey Jordison and Slipknot are parting ways." said a statement from the band. "I don't wanna live on this planet anymore" responded one fan on twitter. That's a bit much.
Wild Flag: The Sleater Kinner spin-off annouced they had 'run their course' in December 2013, with drummer Janet Weiss telling the skinny that travel problems had led to the band's demise, saying: "Its hard to have a band when you live five hours apart by plane."
Mt. Wolf: Despite being tipped for big things in 2014, the London band ended their time together in December of 2013, blaiming the age-old issue of 'creative differences' for the split. The chilled out band had drawn comparisons to the likes of Polica, Daughter and London Grammar with their epic, chilled out sounds.
Azari & III: Electro-pop revivalists Azari & III called it quits in November 2013, although they also hinted at a return, under another guise, in the future. ""Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, the art project known as AZARI & III has done its work, run its course," they told fans.
