Eminem outdid himself in the violent misogyny department. In the space of a few months, Eminem released music that threatened to punch Lana Del Rey in the face twice, grab Nicki Minaj by the write, and to rape Iggy Azalea ('Put that shit away, Iggy / You don't wanna blow that rape whistle on me / Scream! I love it / 'For I get lost with the gettin' off'). Azalea responded by saying, "I'm bored of the old men threatening young women as entertainment trend." So are we, Iggy.
DIIV bassist Devin Ruben Perez was exposed as an immature bigot. Perez decided to take part in a 4chan Q&A under the inpenetrable username 'Devin-Chan', during which he called feminist musician Meredith Graves "a bitch" and "poonk", which, for those of us who don't waste their lives on 4chan, is slang for anus. He then described Grimes as "physically repulsive" and, just to prove that he doesn't limit his bigotry to women, called Jake Gyllenhaal the "biggest fucking faggot ever."
Cee-Lo Green decided that he would do something really helpful for all victims of sexual assault, and define rape for them. "People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!" he told his fans. He subsequently deleted the tweet, then his account, and perhaps his career.
Charli XCX was asked if she was masturbating. In an appearance on Dutch radio, Charli XCX was asked to say good morning "in the most sensual way." As she prepared to oblige in good humour, the DJ interrupted to say, "Do you have your hands on your body, is that what I see? I thought you were fingering yourself or something. That was one of the most horniest mornings ever." "I wouldn't do that for you," came the singer's understandably curt reply. She took to Twitter to voice her disgust before said DJ replied "I don't care, I love it."
Female headliners at festivals continued to be a collectors item. In fact, it's not just the headline slot women are being denied. On average, across the major UK festivals this year, women comprised less than 16% of the total acts, and all-female bands made up 3.5%. Nearly 54% of the acts on Reading Leeds' line-up were all-male bands. To the likes of St. Vincent, Haim, Warpaint and Savages, the message that's being sent out by mainstream festivals is this: If you're a massive pop star like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, please feel free to be female at V Festival, but if you attempt to enter our sacred rock scene with your feminine wiles, you will not be welcome.
Lana Del Rey told an interviewer, "The issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. I'm more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what's going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities." She has a point - one of the clauses you have to agree to when you sign the feminist contract is that you are no longer allowed to express any interest in astronomy. Lana, please feel free to read this feature any time you're struggling to sleep.
Future and Kanye West turned their 'I Won' song into a horrendous video game. To gain points, and lose your respect for women, you throw chains at bikini-clad women as they walk across a beach and, if you hit them, they turn into a gold cup. "Click the left mouse button to toss a chain on your trophy!" the instructions gleefully state. It is a horrible, nasty, misogynistic embarrassment.
Iggy Azalea revealed that she can no longer crowdsurf because she was subjected to incessant groping. "Please don't," she said. "That's a violation. Buying my album for $12 doesn't mean you get to finger me." Incidentally, in the same interview, she was also subjected to questions such as: "Are you a porn star in the bedroom?" and when she was reluctant to answer, was asked, "How are you getting bashful, but you go on stage with your ass out?" Sigh.
Haim joined the long list of female artists who've become fed up with being referred to as a 'girl band.' The media seems fixated by the notion that an all-female band is either an endearing novelty or an uncredible pop act. "I just see us as a band," Alana Haim told The Telegraph. "When people call us a girl band, I take it as an insult - being a girl in a band shouldn't be a thing. It seems so medieval."
Sexist song lyrics. In fact, there is not a month that goes by without a misogynistic song lyric making its way onto the airwaves. Snoop Dogg's verse in Jason Derulo's 'Wiggle' for example, includes the lyrics, "What you will and what you want and what you may do completely separated, till I deeply penetrate it." Then there are songs that are so bland you almost miss their sexist undertones. Magic's 'Rude' for example, which asks a woman's father if he can "have" his daughter for the rest of his life, before insisting, when he says no, that he's "gonna marry her anyway." Does the woman you intend to marry have a say in any of this? Don't even get us started on One Direction's 'Steal My Girl'.
Pussy Riot were subjected to a fairly ridiculous post-prison interview. The Russian feminist punk band were released in December after being imprisoned for taking part in a church protest. During their first interview after their release, Nadya Tolokonnikova was asked if she got more attention for being "pretty and thick-lipped", and Masha Alyokhina was asked, "What is up with your eyebrows?" It was both insulting and irrelevant.
