Marillion – 'Thankyou Whoever You Are'

Marillion are traditionally (and often unfairly) maligned as hoary prog-rockers, loved by slightly odd beardy types and loathed by most of the rest of the record buying public. This attitude, which stems from the time that notoriously pretentious Fish took on vocal and lyric-wring duties, something he hasn't done since the late 1980's, is perhaps a little out of date – recently, there have been signs of the band reinventing themselves for a modern audience.

Now on their 14th studio album, and with another lead singer Steve Hogarth comfortably ensconced, the band return with ' Thankyou Whoever You Are' – an instantly forgettable Coldplay-aping ballad that so brazenly looks for the soars-factor (histrionic vocals, strings, guitar solo) that you can't help but feel a little twang of pride at their desperate endeavour. Apart from the fact that Hogarth's vocal delivery bizarrely renders the chorus as "Sank you, whoever you are…" Marillion have crafted an inoffensive, lighters-aloft moment that their hardcore fanbase will lap up. The uninitiated, though, will probably not give it a second glance.
