A petition protesting Iggy Azalea winning 'Top Rap Song' at the Billboard Music Awards has reached over 21,000 signatures.
One of the most controversial awards on the night, Azalea walked away with the gong at the award ceremony on 17 May, beating Big Sean, Nicki Minaj and Bobby Schurmda. Azalea won for her track 'Fancy' with Charli XCX.
However a petition on Change.org by Nicki Minaj fan Christian Ferguson was launched recently claiming “The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. ’Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting.” Ferguson's argument was that without Azalea's track in the category, Minaj's Anaconda would have been the clear winner.
The petition attracted 21,661 signatures before being closed. In a message Ferguson expressed his thanks for all those who had contributed. "To everyone who signed the petition to retract Iggy’s Billboard Music Award, thank you first and foremost; however, a spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, who produces the award show, has said that the award is still Iggy’s unfortunately. We got to nearly 20,000 signatures [note: this was subsequently updated], which is freaking insane. I think Nicki possibly saw the petition, and MTV even wrote an article about it! Thank you for all the all the support! Let’s make sure Nicki rightfully takes what’s hers home next year by requesting radio stations to play “Hey Mama” and “The Night Is Still Young”, as well as purchasing them both on iTunes if you haven’t already!"
Comments on the petition include some gems as "NICKI SLAYS and egghead lasagne does not", "Ichty ariola [sic] is a pest that needs to be exterminated" and "Igloo Australia is the worst bloody rapper in the world."
Azalea recently was defended by an unlikely ally - Snoop Dogg, with whom she had previously had a furious war of words. Snoop was asked recently what his thoughts are on this “suburban streak in hip-hop”, including Iggy Azalea and Macklemore, in a new interview with the New York Times. “Rap is supposed to grow,” he replied. “One thing about Iggy and Macklemore: They got soul. They’re inspired by hip-hop. I don’t care how you’re gonna take it to your people and flip it and dip it and serve it.”
You may recall that Snoop Dogg and Iggy Azalea have had a history of conflict, which began when he posted a picture mocking Azalea on Instagram last year, which then led to a string of heated Tweets and Instagram posts between the two of them. It eventually ended with Snoop apologizing to her, saying in a video he posted to Instagram: “No more bad talk. I apologize. I'm sorry. I won't do it again.”
