Slaves: 'We have seven songs written for our next album'

The punk duo talk to Gigwise about honesty, never writing a love song + their next record

It's been a massive year for Slaves, with 'Cheer Up London' and 'The Hunter' earning them a role as force of punk nature in 2015, while Are You Satisfied proved them to be a million miles from a gimmick - but a Mercury-nominated act to be reckoned with. In the wake of the news that their tour was being postponed, we caught up with the duo to talk about progress on their next record.

"We've got seven new songs, so we're getting there," guitarist Laurie Vincent told Gigwise from the Mercury Prize - which they totally shutdown with an epic opening performance. "It feels like it's going to come really quickly which is nice."

Drummer and vocalist Isaac Holman continued: "It's very much still us - the bones are still the same but we're exploring and going down different routes, but it's still Slaves."

Speaking about why their debut album Are You Satisfied struck such a chord, Holman replied: "It's honest, we're just saying exactly what we feel. We're definitely ourselves. You do have an alter-ego when you step on the stage, but when we write music it's completely us."

Vincent added: "It's straight from the heart - it's not songs that were written to be on the radio. We looked back to what it was in the '60s when people wrote hits then you got a singer to sing it and then there was bands, now we're going back to solo again and I think it's rare you get a band that isn't just singing about love and stuff, I guess. Different subject matter, maybe."

"I don't feel like an actor, I just feel like a normal bloke that's found himself on a red carpet."

Meanwhile, the band have been forced to postpone a number of tour dates due to Holman's recent shoulder injury. Read the full statement below and visit here for tickets and information.

"Hello everybody. As some of you may know I dislocated my shoulder whilst performing the other night. I went to hospital and they put it back in for me but I am now in a sling and do not have much mobility in my arm. The doctor said I can't drum for the next few weeks or there is a good chance it will come out again and cause some serious long term damage. Therefore we are going to have to pull out of the remaining shows of our November UK tour and they will be rescheduled to the dates below in January. All your tickets will still be valid and we will all have a very nice time together, just not yet. I'm very sorry. Totally gutted but I guess shit happens doesn't it. Love to you all. Isaac xxx”
