UK band Viola Beach are reported to have been killed in an accident, after a car they travelling into plunged from a bridge into a canal in Sweden.

The BBC reports that all four members were among five Britons who lost their lives when a vehicle left a bridge and crashed 82ft into a canal below in Stockholm yesterday (Saturday 13 February).

The Foreign Office said it was working with local authorities and supporting the families of the Warrington-based rising indie stars, Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin.

They were due to play in Warrington last night after appearing at a Swedish festival on Friday night, and also had support dates lined up with Blossoms.

Local police say that divers recovered the bodies of the victims, and that the Nissan Qashqai they were driving plunged through a gap in the bridge, when it opened to let a bus pass beneath.

Inspector Martin Bergholm said: "For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal. The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear."
