It’s now just over a year since David Bowie succumbed to cancer and passed away yet, as evidenced by his two Brit Awards nominations, the singer’s popularity and influence still show no signs of waving.
The creator behind such enduring musical figures such as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke is nominated in two categories – British Male Solo Artist and British Album Of The Year for Blackstar – and Bowie is expected to scoop both of the gongs.
He’d previously won the award for Best British Male in 1984 and then 2004. He was also acknowledged for his Outstanding Contribution To British Music in 1996.
This is the sixth occasion that Bowie has been nominated for Best British Male and this year the late star faces competition from Craig David, Kano, Michael Kiwanuka and Skepta.
Blackstar, his final album and one that has come to be ranked among his best works, is up against The 1975’s - deep breath - The 1975 - I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, Kano’s Made In The Manor, Michael Kiwanuka’s Love & Hate and Skepta’s Konnichiwa. Craig David’s probably wondering what he did wrong.
Those of you inclined to a flutter have been offered the following odds by the folk at Coral: David Bowie (8-11 to win), Craig David and Skepta (4-1 each), Kano and Michael Kiwanuka (8-1 each).
Elsewhere, in the best British Female Solo Artist category, Emeli Sande is being tipped for victory but faces competition from Anohni, Ellie Goulding, Lianne La Havas and Nao.
X-Factor winners and planet-straddling girl group Little Mix have, alongside Skepta, nabbed the most nominations with three each.
The late Leonard Cohen is also up for a posthumous award in the shape of International Male Solo Artist. He’s up against Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, Drake and The Weeknd.
All will be revealed tomorrow night.
