Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney has spoken out about reformed bands replacing original members, following the reunions of Black Sabbath and Van Halen.

Black Sabbath reunited last year but have not retained their original line-up after drummer Bill Ward left over a contract dispute. Similarly, Van Halen also no longer have their original members as they released a new album earlier this year without bass player Michael Anthony, instead letting Eddie van Halen’s son take over on bass duties.

Carney said to Rolling Stone: "I don't know if I'd want to watch Black Sabbath without Bill Ward. The band is Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Ozzy.  I have no interest in seeing bands with partial lineups."

He went on to talk about Van Halen, adding: “I just saw Van Halen without Michael Anthony. I'm not a very big Van Halen fan but it was such a f*cking bummer. Like what the f*ck is the point?

“I mean, sure, Eddie Van Halen's son is a pretty good bass player and he's a 20-year-old kid and that's cool, but like, what the f*ck is that? That's f*cking retarded. If someone is able to be in a band for 30 years and then people are okay with replacing him with a 17-year-old, they're obviously motherf*cking assholes, right?”

The Black Keys are set to release their own documentary later this year and will be making a rare UK festival appearance at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August.
