Muse have revealed that they were inspired by the music being made by Skrillex when they recorded their new album, 'The 2nd Law'.
The band teased the album earlier this year with a trailer containing what sounded like some of the wild and heavy dubstep sounds made famous by Skrillex, leading many to wonder if Muse would ditch guitars entirely for their sixth studio album.
Olympic single 'Survival' disproved that theory somewhat but Matt Bellamy has stated that he pays attention to new music trends and is inspired by Skrillex.
"We went to see Skrillex in Camden around October," Bellamy told NME. "We went, 'F*ck, it's so heavy,' loved it. I was like a full metal gig, they had circles of death, people were moshing, I hadn't seen a reaction like that to electronic music before. We took inspiration and came up with (album track) 'The 2nd Law: Unsustainable'."
Discussing the philosophy behind the sound, Bellamy added: "The moshpit has moved from guitars and gone towards the laptop, so with that song we're trying to see if we can challenge the laptop. We created something that was dubsteppy but we wanted to see if we could do it with real instruments. We wanted to ask, 'Can rock bands compete with what these guys are doing?'"
Earlier this week saw Gigwise readers crown Muse's 'Survival' as their essential Summer anthem for 2012.
Meanwhile, the band have also been offered the chance to run their hometown of Teignmouth at some point this year.
