Katy Perry's preacher father has urged his congregation to pray for his 'devil daughter', and revealed that seeing fans 'worship' the star makes him weep.
Perry, once a singer in her father's church, had a strict upbringing but broke away from religion when embarking on a pop career notable for singles such as 'I Kissed A Girl' and also wearing squirty cans of cream on her bra. Her father, Keith Perry, asked his congregation to pray for his popstar daughter and revealed how seeing her perform live often left him in tears.
"They ask how can I preach if I produce a girl who sang about kissing another girl?" he said in Santa Fe Springs. "I was at a concert of Katy’s where there were 20,000. I’m watching this generation and they were going at it. It almost looked like church."
"I stood there and wept and kept on weeping and weeping. They’re loving and worshipping the wrong thing."
Katy Perry has a close relationship with her parents, despite her pop career
Keith Perry will be no doubt thrilled to know that his popstar daughter has no intention of slowing her career, and is currently working on tracks for her third studio album.
Perry has confirmed that she has been working with many of the same songwriting partners as she did for her last record, including Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells.
She recently explained how Wells "allows me to vomit words. Not that I can't find that with others but he just lets me [makes retching sounds].
"Max and Luke push me the most. As a team we have certain strengths. With Max, it's melody choices, Luke is production and I'm topline and melody."
Perry has also been working on new songs with Sia and continues to work with Bonnie McKee, who worked with her on 'California Gurls'.
