This year single sales in the UK have been among the highest ever, and the Official Charts Company has stated that they could well be the highest.
Most people will have heard Daft Punk's infectious 'Get Lucky' featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers by now, and most people will have formed an opinion on it. A large amount of people have also bought the song, with sales of over a million it is the highest selling single of the year, also making it the 136th song to sell over a million in the UK. Other contenders include Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' (828,000), Ryan Lewis' 'Thrift Shop' (680,000), Pink's 'Just Give Me A Reason' (652,000) and Justin Timberlake's 'Mirrors'(632,000).
The figures are certainly impressive, and there is a chance that 'Get Lucky' could be the highest selling single in the UK ever, but the year is not out yet. With the increased popularity of illegal downloads and file sharing it would be a surprise if this year turned out to be a historic event.
However, as it stands, the current best selling UK single ever, according to Official Charts Company, is 'Something about the Way You Look Tonight/Candle in the Wind' (1997) by Elton John, which clocked up nearly five million sales (4.91 million). Elton John is one of only seven artists that have passed two million sales, and one of two who have passed three million. If Daft Punk are going to make history, then they need to sell almost five times their current amount.
It is worth noting that 1997 saw the top four singles break one million, and the top nineteen pass half a million. This means that there will need to be a general increase in sales for this to be the biggest year for singles sales, and potentially more songs entering the 'one million' sales club. Time will tell, and if 'Get Lucky' continues to sell then one things for sure, we are going to be hearing a lot more of it.
