Fans call to honour location from iconic album art

A petition has been launched to rename the street depicted in the iconic artwork for Paul's Boutique as 'Beastie Boys Square'.
Paul's Boutique was Beastie Boys second album. Released in 1989, it went on to achieve status as a classic and contained essential hip-hop tracks such as 'Hey Ladies', 'Shake Your Rump' and 'B-Boy Bouillabaisse'.
The album sleeve depicts New York's Ludlow Street, shot by Jeremy Shatan. Now, the iconic artwork has pushed fans to fight for the right to have the intersection between said street and Rivington Street renamed as Beastie Boys Square.
"When Adam Yauch passed away, people came here for three or four days putting candles and flowers out, taking photos, really mourning his death," said local business owner Vicky Dalva in an interview with DNAInfo. "At least one person comes in each week asking if it’s Paul’s Boutique."
The petition is being headed by LeRoy McCarthy, who also started a similar petition to have a street named after Notorious BIG. View the petition here. It will be presented to the local community board in early January.
