The track is an astute comment on lad culture

For our second specially-curated Distiller TV session we invited London-via-Cambridge six-piece Ugly along to The Distillery to let their woozy rock renditions wash over us.

After setting up in the stunning surroundings of the studio just outside of Bath, the band launched into jangly jaunt ‘King Of Swings’, showcasing wistful riffs, pacing percussion and a bloody good bit of brass.

Watch Ugly’s Distiller TV session below:

Speaking about the track, vocalist and guitarist Samuel Goater begins, “‘King Of Swings' is about lad culture mainly, and the negative sides of it, I guess,” before drummer Charlie Wayne continues, “in the same way if [previous single] ’The Last Supper At The Regal Wetherspoon’ is about the journey on a night out then ‘King Of Swings’ is to all intents and purposes what happens at the aftermath outside of the pubs. The main focus after you go to the Wetherspoons is at three in the morning when the bouncers just pick fights with people and I guess it’s about that really, it’s a dog eat dog world out on Regent Street at three in the morning in Cambridge.”

The band also played another track with us: the aforementioned ‘The Last Supper At The Regal Wetherspoon’, which will be dropping soon. The track was released via Sports Team’s label Holm Front last year and Ugly describe it as being, “about our Wetherspoons in Cambridge, which is huge, and that’s where we used to go. The song was written around the idea of the disciples going for a night out to our local and the parallels you get between groups of idiots there.”

Aside from copious trips to Spoons, the band also have the following live dates coming up in the capital:

AUGUST
27 - London, Sebright Arms

SEPTEMBER
13 - London, The Victoria
