For a song that contains the pleading secret message “I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry”, it’s only fitting that it would be one of Swift’s most heartbreaking songs.

Throughout her career, the biggest critique naysayers would throw at Swift would be that all she writes about is “boys and heartbreak”, but 'Breathe' is prime proof that that’s not the case. Released as a promotional single on the lead-up to the release of Fearless, 'Breathe' was written with fellow American singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat who shares her background vocals on the track. Powered by an acoustic guitar and violin and inspired by the ending of a friendship, 'Breathe' is a song that Swift describes as a track “about having to say goodbye to somebody, but it never blames anybody. Sometimes that’s the most difficult part. When it’s nobody’s fault.”

Rather than pointing the fingers at one another, 'Breathe' showcases the growth and maturity in Swift’s songwriting since her debut - and even when compared to other tracks on Fearless.  If 'Fifteen' was about the strong bonds we form during our adolescence, then 'Breathe' is about coming to terms with them when they end. Although not everyone has been in a relationship or in love, many of Swift’s fans can relate to the universal feeling of a friendship ending. It’s within those themes in particular, that the song has become something of a sleeper hit with fans and casual listeners alike.

Specificity in her lyrics and storytelling is what has garnered Swift such a devoted fanbase (there’s a reason why everyone knows about that scarf from 'All Too Well'), though the intrinsic beauty of 'Breathe' is how deeply unspecific it really is. While we can’t all relate to lyrics like “up on the roof with a school girl crush” or “now I'm pacing back and forth, wishing you were at my door”, they can relate to the pain and loss that Swift addresses when a close friendship ends.

Fearless (Taylor's Version) is out now.
