More about: Halloween
Halloween weekend is here - what’re you going as? No matter how old we get, we can’t seem to shake the sheer joy at getting a full costume on and listening to ‘Monster Mash’. We’d argue there’s actually no better holiday, giving you all the fun of a party without the need to trek home and see family. And halloween songs? Far superior to Christmas carols…
Getting you set up with a party playlist direct from our team, we’ve picked some of our favourite spooky sounds ranging from the classics to on-theme new additions.
Rina Sawayama - 'This Hell'
Rina's personalised invitation to eternal damnation. Soaring guitar lines and deep, eighties-esque synths, 'This Hell' is appropriate to take over a room of any size. If you've been a sinner over the past year, this is the anthem readymade for the top of your lungs - before two months of repentance to take yourself off Santa's naughty list. (Rishi Shah)
Blink-182 – ‘I Miss You’
It’s such a heartfelt and earnest track that everyone knows all the words too. It’s only really halloweeny by virtue of the black and white video and spiders being in the lyrics, but thats good enough for me. (Cian Kinsella)
Tommy Cash - ‘Winaloto’
From the discordant flute synth that introduces the track to the over-produced 808 samples that pepper the bottom end, this Tommy Cash moment sends chills up and down my spine. His delivery is spiky, insidious and the COLORS show that accompanied its releases sees Cash don an equally spooky pumpkin orange bodywarmer. (Alisdair Grice)
Lana Del Rey - ‘Season of the Witch’
I can’t imagine a Halloween season feeling complete without the eerie sound of Lana Del Rey’s cover of ‘Season of the Witch’. Lana’s striking vocals certainly offer a more spooky element to the song, complemented by haunting instrumentals, making it the perfect mellow number to play at your Halloween party. (Lauren Cox)
The Amazons - Dark Visions
One essential for your Halloween party playlist is an all-out rock banger that will get everyone moshing around your kitchen or living room in their extravagant fancy dress costumes. Although their monster single Black Magic is also a contender, Dark Visions from Reading rockers The Amazons' second album Future Dust fits the bill perfectly. Not only are the riffs incredibly menacing, but the ghoulish lyrics vividly describe demons, shadows and howling beasts. There's also an incredible solo from guitarist Chris Alderton around the 3:20 mark which is sure to leave jaws - and vampire teeth - dropped on the floor in awe. (Karl Blakesley)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - ‘Heads Will Roll’
This track from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a straight-up banger - with its punchy synths and gothic atmosphere to fit into the Halloween theme. Especially with Karen O crying out, "Off, off with your head, dance til you're dead (dead)," makes this track a no-brainer for any Halloween playlist! (Brett Herlingshaw)
The Last Shadow Puppets - ‘Dracula Teeth’
Spooky, sultry vampirism as sung by Alex Turner with Miles Kane's vocals underlying makes for the best Halloween karaoke performance without having to dip into an overdone classic. (Evie Gower)
The Mysterines - ‘In My Head’
You could pretty much just slap on the entirety of The Mysterines’ Reeling and have the perfect cinematic Halloween soundtrack. Something about Lia’s voice is so spooky and witch, regularly dropping into violent levels of power in her signature tone. ‘In My Head’ is the sort of song that has everyone feeling like a main character, or a villain in this case.
