This weekend, the 87th Academy Awards take place. Which means, for the 87th year, Hollywood's beloved elite will gather in LA to pat each other on the back, make tearful, overwrought speeches and pretend to look happy about losing. We can't wait.

Who better then to wade in on the outcome than Years & Years, whose lead singer, Olly Alexander, rose to fame as an actor in films such as God Help The Girl, Le Week-End, Great Expectations and The Riot Club?

When we caught up with the band at Eurosonic Festival, the nominations had just been announced. "Transformers?" ventured synth-played Emre Turkmen hopefully as we began to read out the list of nominees. "It missed out? Urgh."

"I really want to see Boyhood", Turkmen continued, once he'd overcome the disappointment of Michael Bay's snub. "It's Richard Linklater, I love him."

"I've seen Boyhood, it's amazing," offered Alexander. "I've only seen that and Grand Budapest Hotel off that list. I would vote for Boyhood. It's a bit long and there's no plot, which is fine. But it really is good. Watch it. It makes you feel a bit depressed about how we're all going to age and eventually die."

"I just saw Birdman", said bassist Mikey Goldsworthy. "That was really good. It's all one shot, it's really cool." Birdman, which stars Michael Keaton as a washed-up movie star, recently edged ahead of Boyhood as the bookies' favourite to win Best Picture.

As for those films which missed out on an Oscar nomination, "The last film I saw that I thought was really good was actually on a plane on the way to LA where we did our video," explained Turkmen. "It was The Drop, with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini, RIP. It's really good."

"The one before that he did with Julia Louis Dreyfus was just awful," added Goldsworthy, referring to Enough Said, Gandolfini's penultimate film before his death in 2013.  "I didn't like it. Sorry."
