It’s shaping up to be a bumper year for Suede fans, with not only a new album The Blue Hour on the table but also a definitive feature documentary Suede: The Insatiable Ones, commissioned by Sky Arts. It’s one to watch out for, with it being directed by Mike Christie, who first met the band while they were working with cult artist and all-round hero Derek Jarman.
No stranger to the art of music documentary making, the industrious Christie also has a New Order film also scheduled for release this September. This is absolutely the right time for a Suede documentary, says Christie in a press release, “This is a band who are once again at the peak of their artistic powers and only now in the right place to reflect deeply on their lives, past and work with brutal honesty.” Christie and the band have trawled through many a personal archive to piece back together their story, so you’ll get to witness behind the gory scenes as well as Suede’s golden years of their self-titled debut and Dog Man Star.
Frontman Brett Anderson agrees that this film’ll be more than just an overview, allowing viewers to get up close and personal with the band as they were: “This isn't a powder-puff promotional tool, it’s a film that grasps at the very essence of what the band is.”
Make a note in your diaries for 24 November 9pm, as Sky Arts will be giving Suede: The Insatiable Ones its first TV airing on that date. But die-hards might want to attend its premiere in London on 20 November, venue yet to be announced, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, tune into the most recent song released to preview the forthcoming Suede album: 'Life Is Golden'.
