XFM played their swan song last night after 23 years of broadcasting and it was MC5's 'Kick Out The Jams'.
The Global associated rock radio will resurrect as the rebranded Radio X which has pretty much the same ethos as XFM just with some new faces and voices behind the microphones.
'Kick Out The Jams' was the track XFM debuted their Londonwide commercial station with on 1 September 1997 and was chosen by host Lliana Bird to be the last song the station played before it's rebirth on September 21.
The #wewerexfm was created to pay tribute to over two decades of alternative music from the station. Check out some tweet highlights and the final few minutes of XFM broadcasting below.
They genuinely helped bring amazing alternative music into the mainstream, nurtured fine talent and changed radio for the better #wewerexfm

The XFM rebrand, Radio X, will see a brand new cast of presenters including Radio 1 breakfast veteran Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay, Johnny Vaughn and Kaiser Chief's Ricky Wilson. The press release of Moyles' announcement read: "Radio X will focus on fresh rock and guitar-based music alongside huge personalities. And personalities don't get any bigger than Chris Moyles."
