More about: Soundwave Festival
Following days of speculation and the news late last night that grunge band L7 had removed themselves from the lineup, Australia's biggest annual rock festival, Soundwave 2016, has now officially been cancelled "due to poor ticket sales".
Soundwave's organiser, AJ Maddah, issued the following statement earlier today on Twitter:
It has been a disastrous run up to Soundwave 2016, with several catastrophies happening one after the other.
For example, with around a month to go, it recently emerged that the venues had not been booked for the touring festival's Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne legs.
Billed bands NOFX and Bring Me The Horizon both made public comments that casted doubt on the event. This tweet from BMTH dropped earlier this month:
On Wednesday, NOFX guitarist Eric Melvin said the following on Instagram: "Soundwave cancelling sw16 isn't going to stop me from seeing my Australian mates at Xmas.....!"
AJ Maddah also accused ticketing companies Eventopia and Ticketek of refusing to release finances from ticket sales to fund the festival and help pay artists that had already been booked for the event, saying, "We cannot hold [the] festival without their support."
So, now it seems that L7's statement that they were pulling out of the event, sighting "circumstances beyond our control", was remarkably prescient. Soundwave 2016 is no more.
