The Rolling Stones have announced that they are set to play a pretty massive, free gig in Cuba later this month.
The band is currently on a America Latina Ole Latin American tour, which will end on 17 March in Mexico city. The free gig, which will take place in Havana on 25 Match, will be the first open air concert in the country by a British rock band.
The Havana gig will come three days after an historic visit by the US President Baracak Obama to Cuba.
The band are also leading a musician to musician initiative that encourages major suppliers of musical instruments donate equipment for the benefit of Cuban musicians of all genres. Donors include The Gibson Foundation, Vic Firth, RS Berkeley, Pearl, Zildjian, Gretsch, Latin Percussion, Roland and BOSS with additional assistance from the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation.
The Rolling Stones said: “We have performed in many special places during our long career but this show in Havana is going to be a landmark event for us, and, we hope, for all our friends in Cuba too.”
The gig will be called Concert For Amity and will be filmed and produced by JA Digital, with Paul Dugdale directing. Julie Jakobek of JA Digital said: “It’s a great honour to be working with the Rolling Stones again on this hugely exciting and historic event”.
