A notebook used by Queen’s Freddie Mercury, which contains early drafts of songs such as ‘The Show Must Go On’, is set to go on sale at auction.

The notebook was written by Mercury - who died from complications from AIDS in 1991 -towards the very end of his life, between 1988 and 1990. It contains lyrics, either partial or whole, to a number of the band’s last hits, including ‘The Show Must Go On’ and ‘Too Much Love Will Kill You’.

The notebook is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £70,000 when it goes on sale at Bonham’s entertainment memorabilia auction in June.

You can see a high-res photo of the first draft of 'The Show Must Go On' - including numerous scribbles and corrections - here.

Speaking of the notebook, Bonhams’ Stephen Haycock told The Guardian, “It is a poignant record of that period but it also struck me that it is a testament to the creative energy in the band.”

He added, "Despite his illness and increasing frailty the ideas were still there. His performance on that last album was remarkable considering how frail he was, his vocal powers on some of the tracks are just extraordinary… he did have this incredible drive.”

Meanwhile, Brian May recently refuted Sacha Baron Cohen’s version of the events that led to him leaving the forthcoming Freddie Mercury biopic, saying simply, “He became an arse."
