Iggy Pop has slammed the state of Modern Music - saying 'why don't I just die now?'
The punk hero was speaking at Cannes Film Festival, where a new documentary about his band The Stooges - Gimme Danger premiered, its directed by filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. Iggy lamented modern music, "Now you can push a button and get rich quick".
Iggy was quick to take-down the current process of making music, and more directly what it all means for artists these days. The Stooges frontman said, "The digital age has made collecting money so incredibly efficient. When we started our band we didn’t know what publishing was. Now you can push a button and get rich quick" Pop said, as reported by The Guardian.
"It might get to the point where it’s going to grip everybody by the shoulders and shake us and then throw us down and get rid of us", he said concernedly.
In the interview he imitated the sound of a techno beat before dryly saying: "It’s like: woah, you know! Why don’t I just die now". The hilarious story was about "a big yob from Serbia" who enjoyed "new techno and electronic" music. "You gonna be polite but then when the guy walks away you’re gonna be like: 'Oh fuck you, Igor.'", said Iggy.
After watching the documentary, he said it made him realise that he was “a product of my times” - as well as the fact he’d been on acid for most of it. However, he said he now doesn't do anything stronger than alcohol, and he advised against his own history. “I don’t drug up anymore,” he admitted. “Everybody should just drop that shit, simple as that. For me, the best is a very good wine – but weed is OK for most people.”
His latest album Post-Pop Depression has been one of our favourites of the year so far.
And, although it's easy to dismiss another aging rocker bemoaning the state of modern music, Iggy's salient points to have something to be answered for - especially his concluding remarks on all matters, “If everyone could just calm the fuck down a little bit that would be good". Never have such truer words been spoken.
