Ed Sheeran will play The 02 arena in North Greenwich, London, on 22 June as part of the venue's 10th anniversary plans.
The Divide pop superstar, who broke the internet and stormed the charts, with his new album, doesn't need much warning to shift tickets so they're on sale from 5pm today. They will be available here.
Of the upcoming show Ed Sheeran says: “I am really excited to be joining the celebrations for The O2’s 10th Birthday. The O2 is such an iconic venue and has played host to some of my biggest inspirations. It’s always a privilege to play there and taking part in the 10th Birthday celebrations makes it even more special.”
Sheeran joins the likes of alt-J, Celine Dion and Jamiroquai at the 10th anniversary bash.
Of course The 02 is far more than ten years old as a building, it's just ten years since the government finally realised the initial concept of the Millennium Dome was a complete let-down.
The building was originally opened January 1, 2000, as an exhibition centre, celebrating the arrival of the third millennium. But with half the visitor numbers Tony Blair and the New Labour government anticipated, the exhibition was since demolished, and the New Millennium Experience Company Limited who ran it forced to enter voluntary liquidation.
Now with an iconic building has a business model that's operating like clockwork. Since 2005, The 02 has thrived as an arena for sports and music events. The talent it attracts to London is sublime (or at least a huge name).
Ed Sheeran being the biggest pop star on the planet is a fitting way to celebrate a building that itself is a bit larger than life.
