The 1975’s Matt Healy stopped the band’s gig at the Fillmore in Detroit last night (May 22) to make an impassioned speech about the suicide bombing at Ariana Grande’s concert at the Manchester Arena.

Manchester-born Healy addressed the crowd and said that nationalism and religion were “over”. He was speaking hours after the explosion in Manchester. The death toll currently stands at 22 with a further 59 people injured.

He said: “I’m bored of nationalism and I’m bored of racism. It’s over. Nationalism, religion, all these regressive things, they’re over. We can’t carry on in the way that we’re carrying on.

“We’re from Manchester and where we used to hang out, the actual place that we used to hang out, someone put a bomb in there tonight and then killed a bunch of kids that were going to a fucking show in Manchester.

“I don’t need to be educated on fucking anything to say that that’s bullshit.

“I don’t know what it’s in the name of, so I apologise if it’s not in the name of religion, if it’s not in the name of nationalism, but these are things that keep happening and I’m fucking pissed off about it. And I’m sorry.”

Elsewhere, it has been reported that equal numbers of adult and child casualties admitted to the Manchester Royal Infirmary’s A&E department.

It has also been reported that Ariana Grande has suspended her world tour in the wake of the bombing. She is scheduled to play at London’s O2 Arena on Thursday (May 25) and Friday (May 26).

A statement on the O2 Arena’s website reads: “Along with everyone else, we are shocked and saddened by the terrible tragedy in Manchester. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families. Ariana is due to perform at The O2 on Thursday and Friday and we will advise as soon as we can as to the status of those shows.”
