It was the collaboration that never was but LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy has said that he and the late David Bowie almost worked on a joint album.

It wouldn’t have been the first time that the pair would have worked together. Murphy recorded Bowie’s vocal contribution to Arcade Fire’s ‘Reflector’ as well remixing ‘Love Is Lost’ from Bowie’s penultimate album, The Next Day. He also contributed percussion to the tracks ‘Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)’ and ‘Girl Loves Me’ on the Dame’s final album, Blackstar.

Revealing to the BBC that Lou Reed was the one person he would’ve been starstruck by, Murphy added that his work with David Bowie could have been greater.

“I don’t think I could have talked to [Lou Reed],” Murphy explained. “And that’s saying a lot because I knew David Bowie, I talked to David Bowie. I thought I couldn’t talk to him, but he was so gracious and so friendly… I had an email friendship with David Bowie, which one of the weirder, more amazing things.”

He revealed that, despite contributing percussion to Blackstar, he became “overwhelmed” by an invitation from Bowie and producer Tony Visconti to co-produce the album.

“I reached out to David and said, ‘I’d love to do a record just me and you’,” Murphy said. “He said, ‘It’s funny you mention that, please look me up when you get back to New York.'” However, by the time they hooked up, Bowie was already underway with work on Blackstar.
