In a ceremony on July 17 it was declared that the date was to be known as ‘Michael ‘Killer Mike’ Render Day’, with the rapper honoured by City Councilman Andre Dickens, who said: “I respect you in so many ways. You represent the ATL well.”
Killer Mike also spoke at the event, urging the local government to make sure “that this city is not polarized by race or class.” He also raised issues specific to the city, such as affordable housing, and allowing teenagers to sell bottled water on the streets.
As well as his high-profile music career, Killer Mike was also recognised for his outspoken political activism, which has often seen him become something of an informal ambassador for the city on mainstream US political shows.
He also owns a number of small businesses across the city, most prominently his chain of S.W.A.G. Barbershops. The franchise recently announced that it will expand to include a 4-chair branch within the Phillips Arena, home of basketball team the Atlanta Hawks, with customers given a full view of the court to catch a game while they get their hair cut. Mike was also honoured by the city last September, after it was announced that a $11.6 million tunnel-boring machine, used to help supply the city with water, was to be named ‘Driller Mike’. “Before I die, I want a street named after me, maybe Michael Render Way,” Mike told the Associated Press. “But this is a great midlife goal. This is truly an honor.”
