Doesn’t anyone stay split up these days? Although in the case of The Knife, we’re not going to be complaining about what appears to be their imminent return following their re-appearance on Facebook and the unveiling of a series of mysterious videos.
The Swedish electronic sibling duo of Karin Dreijer Andersson and her brother Olof Dreijer split up in 2014 after performing what was believed to be their final show at the Iceland Airwaves festival that year. The pair had just released their fourth album, Shaking The Habitual, which had been preceded by their eponymous debut (2001), Deep Cuts (2003), and Silent Shout (2006).
Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez scored a massive worldwide hit with his cover of the band’s ‘Heartbeats’ after it was used in a Sony Bravia advert.
But back to the present. The Knife have posted what could easily be a scene from a David Lynch film. The unsettling video, entitled ‘Mother Of Knives Skill’, features a masked couple which could or could not be the band – we’re opting for the former – playing a bizarre game of knife throwing. And if that wasn’t disturbing enough, the film is accompanied a strange voiceover which is played in reverse. The display of knives is pretty chilling too.
Look, we know it’s Monday morning and all that, and you’d probably like to start your week a bit more gently but, by the same token, it’ll give you as much as a jolt as that coffee your holding. Have a look and see for yourself.
It’s the third video they’ve posted in the last week. The first showed a gummy cherry sweet being split by a large knife while the second finds them in disturbing territory once again as more knives feature at the centre of a surreal cooking show.
What does it all mean? We’ll let you know just as soon as we hear…
