Wolf Alice have released ‘Beautifully Unconventional’, the third track to be taken from their forthcoming second album, Visions Of A Life. And in keeping with the wide variety of styles displayed on previous releases ‘Yuk Foo’ and ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’, ‘Beautifully Unconventional’ sees the band moving into another direction.
Speaking of the track, singer and guitarist Ellie Rowsell said: “I wrote it about one of my friends. My feelings towards her reminded me of the film Heathers, where everyone is a Heather and you find your other non-Heather… a ‘you can be my partner in crime’, sorta thing.”
Well, yeah. That really explains things with all the clarity of a foggy day in Beijing. What is certain is that it’s very much at odds with what’s gone on before. ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ found the band encroaching on a shoegaze take on Luscious Jackson while ‘Yuk Foo’ found Wolf Alice taking a detour in more punk territories.
This time round, Wolf Alice are heading off into a more conventional indie area with clipped guitars and a chorus that pushes and pulls. It’s also a pretty short track and clocks in at just over two minutes so it certainly doesn’t outstay its welcome. Quite how this will hang together with the other tracks in the context of an album will be revealed when Visions Of A Life is released on September 29.
Wolf Alice will tour the UK and Ireland in November. They play:
