U2 have announced their imminent return with new material with confirmation that their next new song is called ‘The Blackout’ – and it’s out later today (August 30). The news comes via the band’s Twitter feed with a 16-second teaser and follows on after some of U2’s fans received cryptic promotional letters.
The band have also confirmed that an announcement will be made concerning he release of their new album, Songs Of Experience. My, how we’ve come along as a society – we now get an announcement confirming the date of when a real, proper announcement is to be made. All being well, perhaps U2 will release the album in something resembling a traditional format instead of clogging up your i-Tunes. We’ll see…
But yes… the preview of ‘The Blackout’. All 16 seconds of it. In common with many bands of their stature, the black and white clip shows U2 playing in the kind of intimate surroundings that you’ll never see them in (unless you were around in the early 80s or catching them at them at the Astoria at the turn of the century) to prove their rock’n’roll credentials and their accessibility. Until the next stadium tour. Anyway, from what we can tell, U2 are rocking out and it’ll be interesting to hear the finished product.

As previously reported on Gigwise, U2 revisited their 1986 album, The Joshua Tree, with a massive world tour. What effect it will have on them remains to be seen and whether they’ve gone backwards to go forwards.
