In an uncharacteristically lighthearted moment at a recent show at Toronto’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Billy Corgan treated fans to a spirited acoustic rendition of Miley Cyrus’s 2013 pop smash ‘Wrecking Ball’, reports Pitchfork.
The depilated Smashing Pumpkins frontman has been effusive in his praise for wayward starlet Cyrus in the past, gushing to French radio show Oüi FM Rock Sessions in 2014, ‘She’s a better pop star than 99.99 percent of them,’ before revealing he’d been approached to pen a track for her.
Corgan is currently performing a string of dates to support new solo album, the Rick Rubin-produced ‘Ogilala’, which includes a collaboration with Pumpkins bandmate James Iha.
Nowadays performing under the more heavyweight moniker of William Patrick Corgan, earlier this month the singer told a press conference in London how much of his new material was originally intended for a full-band Smashing Pumpkins record. However, the stresses and strains of the rehearsal room made it "the only project I ever walked away from."
Old friend and confidant Rick Rubin welcomed Corgan and his demos to his California studio and, after a bit of a false start layering electronics on the songs that didn’t quite work for Corgan, a tender suite of material that recalls his bands ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ heyday emerged.
Corgan’s more relaxed, self-assured attitude – even hinting at the same press conference that the door is always open to a Pumpkins reunion – is summed up nicely by the Cyrus cover, recorded by several fans at his Toronto show on Friday.
“I used to think I would never see [the reuinion] happen, but I’m hopeful and open. Our music is aggressive but we’re still young enough to get it done. If we do get back together I’d like us to make new music.”
Earlier this year Miley Cyrus also released new LP ‘Younger Now’
