Tom Petty is reportedly considering suing the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their producer Rick Rubin over the bands track ‘Dani California’.
As previously reported on Gigwise a radio station in America brought to light the glaring similarities between the Chili’s track and Petty’s 90’s hit ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’.
Both of the tracks were produced by Rubin and according to the New York Post Petty has been in discussions with his lawyers about a possible copyright lawsuit.
Petty’s spokeswoman Heidi Robinson however refused to comment on the possible lawsuit but did say: "I am well aware of this situation. (The two songs) certainly do sound similar, don't they? I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."
She added: "Tom doesn't have a comment on this at all. I have no idea if he is going to sue the Chili Peppers, and am not prepared to make a comment on that."
- Sounds like an expensive folly on Petty’s part to me. It’ll be hard to prove in a court of law that plagiarism has actually taken place - maybe he should just leave it be.
- If I was the Chilli Peppers I’d be suing myself for pagiarising my own entire back catalogue on my latest album...
- WELL SAID MR.GRANT.
- Maybe someone should sue Flea for crimes against bass playing
- I guess there could be a couple of law-suits.
1992 - Jayhawks, Waiting for the Sun, sound familiar??? Plagiarism over-reaction.
Enough said.......
