So the drinks are on Macca after it was revealed that former Beatle Paul McCartney’s One On One tour earned a staggering $132m [£98m]. The tour took in 37 gigs from April to December and shifted 907, 610 tickets during its eight-month duration.
The One On One tour took in four continents and kicked off in Japan where three of the four concerts there grossed $22.8m [£16.95m] from 143, 826 ticket sales. Moving on to North America, McCartney’s shows in the metropolitan New York area attracted just over 113,000 fans to four venues. Wisely taking his own advice to follow the sun, McCartney headed to South America to play five stadium dates.
Topping up his tan while the rest of starting wrapping up warm, the tour then headed Down Under with stadium shows in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane and two relatively intimate soirees with a pair of arena shows in Sydney, Australia. The tour then wound up in Auckland, New Zealand.
The tour originally kicked off in 2016 with gigs in North America, Europe and swing by Argentina. He also played at the Desert Trip festival alongside iconic artists such as The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters and Bob Dylan at the Coachella festival site in Indio, California, which itself grossed $160m.
And speaking of The Rolling Stones, McCartney’s former 60s rivals came in behind him with a 2017 tour gross of a mere – ahem - $120m. That said, those revenues came from just the No Filter tour that saw the rock’n’roll veterans play 14 dates in Europe in September and October.
