More about:

Born in the wrong era? Pining for the soul speakeasies of Harlem around 1964? Then Georgia’s Mattiel is making records for you.

We should call it Tardis Soul. Crackling with antiquity in the same way that Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ sounded like it was recorded on wax cylinders in Detroit over fifty years ago, Mattiel’s ‘Just A Name’ – a snippet of which can be heard below – is a time-travelling treat that first appeared on the cassette-only Californian label Burger Records before being prodded in the direction of Heavenly Recordings.

A child of her mother’s record collection – Donovan, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Monkees - Mattiel Brown grew up on a farm in rural Georgia before giving up the shit-shovelling life and moving to Atlanta to work as an ad designer, illustrator and set builder, while developing the retro-futurist feel of her self-titled debut album. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jack White and Andre 3000 all crept into her creative sights and, over nine months, she shaped what’s being dubbed “the most exciting rock’n’roll soul record of the year”. By her label, but y’know.
