If you’re going to play a cover version, then at least add something new to it. Just ask Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl who dipped into his Nirvana past to play a unique take of ‘In Bloom’ with jazz collective Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.
The pair hooked up on Saturday night (15 September) for this pretty-bloody-good reading at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles where Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue were playing a headline set as part of the Voodoo Threauxdown festival.
To the sound of massive cheers, Grohl took his place behind the traps for some serious tub-thumping to briefly relive Nirvana’s glory years. And taking place of the late Kurt Cobain was Trombone Shorty with a seriously monster grasp of his instrument. In addition to Trombone Shorty, you’ve also got some fabulous skronkage with the accompanying sax players. And of course there’s Dave Grohl who seems to be having a real ball…
It’s only the second time that Dave Grohl has played ‘In Bloom’ since Nirvana’s demise in 1994. He previously played it with the surviving members of Nirvana following their 2014 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. They were joined by Joan Jett, who took on Kurt Cobain’s lead vocals.
Dave Grohl was also reunited with former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic earlier this month when they played a spirited version of The Vaselines’ ‘Molly Lips’ - a song they frequently unleashed during those heady days of the early 90s. Novoselic’s new band Giants In The Trees were supporting Foo Fighters at Seattle’s Safeco Field when the pair got together once again.
As for that connection between Dave Grohl and Trombone Shorty, you’ll recall that the jazz musician appeared in the New Orleans episode of Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways TV series.
