This is literally a song about the Russian chess player Kasparov

Imagine saying to your mates: “Have you heard the new Tropical Fuck Storm?” You can’t, can you? I can’t tell if it’s an awful name or an amazing one, but it certainly has got my attention and that’s hard to do in this day and age. In the modern market, Tropical Fuck Storm as a name unabashedly screams out.

But don’t let them put you off this absolute jam from the Melbourne band. It’s a weird-arse song, to be quite honest, it’s hard to pinpoint their influences but it’s parts Parquet Courts, Fat White Family, comedy song and all jerky rhythms.

The band are something of a supergroup, formed out of The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin together with High Tension’s Lauren Hammel and Palm Springs’ Erica Dunn. The single’s video is an excellent low budget job which shows Kasparov take on the computer Deep Blue in a game of chess. That’s before it all goes quite surreal and involves making a lot of toy robots explode. It’s like Black Mirror x The Mighty Boosh x The Cardiacs.

Their album A Laughing Death In Meatspace (which is either again one of the best or worst names I’ve heard this year) is to be released into the wild 15th October. So if you want more where that came from, head on over to their Bandcamp and pre-order. They’ve got another song on there called ‘You Let My Tyres Down’ which is also good. Tropical Fuck Storm are probably one of the most weird and imaginative bands you’ll hear this year.

Imagine seeing this band live, though? Fortunately they’ve got three UK dates on their tour which you can peruse below…

26 Oct — Hope & Anchor, London
18 Nov — The Carleton, Morcambe
01 Dec — The Eagle Inn, Salford
