With the new album from Spain’s blues-psych experimentalists Guadalupe Plata on the horizon (26 April via Everlasting Records), we share the only track anyone’s going to hear from it before the album release: 'Corralera Del Veneno'.
The immersive track is driven by guitar riffs which conjure dusty desert roads and haunting night skies. Squalling lead parts add to the drama as drums shuffle along with a shamanic rustle. Vocals sit coated in reverb and serenade you along to the band’s fiercely imaginative world. A world which comes alive on their ambitious new album.
In places, the overarching feel of the LP is one that seems inspired by the transcendental impact of the most affecting experimental, psych and blues albums from the States – there’s elements of Captain Beefheart, John Lee Hooker and Dj. John; in fact, Dr John’s a very prominent influence, as his debut album Gris Gris is one of their favourites. And in order to create something new, the band combine it with sonics which convey their own identity; their sense of place.
Here them out: “Our idea was to get closer to the ceremonial, the sacred and the ritual sounds of our country from one end to the other, the different folk musics, the music that is made in backyards with whatever instruments come to hand, or to accompany the various ritual “fiestas” that take place all over Spain.”
They manage it in some innovative ways, too. The flavour of “deep Spain” is achieved through some oddball recording techniques, including adding the sound of a bottle of anise, a beat-up bandurria and some sounds made by old doors, says the band in a press statement
Three Demons is also said to have homages to Chilean folklore and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, to name a couple of the other interests laden into the music. Sounds pretty exciting to us. Bring on 26 April.
