Jarvis Cocker's new band are well worth your time

Great news Jarvis Cocker fans – the ‘Common People’ hitmaker has unveiled a track with his new eclectic project JARV IS...

The track – a near seven minute epic – is a dizzying thrill ride through krautrock, haunting folk, propulsive electronic experimentation, oriental melodic flourish, velvets drones, and sensational strings. It’s a palpable manifestation of powerful, charged emotions by a group whose unquenchable thirst for discovery of the musical avant-garde has helped them arrive at a level of performance rarely touched.

Cocker, too, is on the form of his life, with an immense energy as band leader that helps make the track a freaky rabble rouser.

If you too are reeling at the new birth of this song, the difficulty if you want to own it physically is the track is only available to buy on their merch stand at live shows. They play All Points East on 25 May and then head to the Primavera Festival. On 4 June they are playing in a cave in Ibiza.

And they are well worth seeing live. Their live career began in 2017 in support of Sigur Ros in Iceland, and they followed that up with some spring shows in 2018. Gigwise’s first encounter with JARV IS... was on Halloween last year in Hackney

The material played that night was described by Steven Kline as Jarvis Cocker at “the most boundless and exploratory of his career.” The set included Mediterranean psych pop, pouty Bacharach lounge ballads, motorik rhythms, and the menace and mythology of The Bad Seed; to name a few sonics picked up that night in Hackney. Added praise says the show is “endlessly surprising.”

JARV IS... are: Jarvis Cocker, Serafina Steer, Emma Smith, Andrew McKinney, Jason Buckle & Adam Betts.
