Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and former 10,000 Things frontman Sam Riley were both awarded ‘Kermode Awards’ at the weekend – an alternate take on the Oscars by film critic Mark Kermode.

In the mock awards ceremony on The Culture Show on BBC2, Riley was honoured as Best Actor for his portrayal of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in the film Control. Kermode said “As someone who didn’t even like Joy Division, it gives me unknown pleasure to hand this award to Sam Riley.”

Upon being given the garish statue, Riley joked: “This is definitely the most dapper statue I’ve ever seen and not a bad likeness, thank you for your support Mark... it hasn’t even got my name on it. Were you just going to give it to whoever turned up?!”

Jonny Greenwood scooped the Best Score for his soundtrack to the Oscar winning film There Will Be Blood.

Before giving the award, Kermode commented: “The biggest travesty of this year’s Oscar nominations was that the greatest score was deemed ineligible because sections of it had been screened previously.”

Greenwood said: “I’d like to thank The Culture Show and Mark Kermode for this wonderful award and, while I’m on the telly, I’d just like to quickly thanks Paul Thomas Andersson for asking me to do it and my wife for putting up with my while I was doing it and all the great musicians who played on it.”

The tongue-in-cheek Kermode Awards honour those who haven’t been nominated at the Oscars.
