A John Lennon statue in Spain is being removed after being constantly attacked by vandals.

The lifesize bronze memorial outside the town hall in Almeria, southern Spain has been daubed in paint and the guitar neck has been broken by vandals in a series of attacks.

The sculpture was erected just two years ago in homage to John Lennon penning The Beatles classic 'Strawberry Fields Forever' in the city.

Its creator Carmen Mudarra said: "These are not casual acts of vandalism. They went there with the intention of damaging it," reports the Daily Mirror.

In an earlier act of vandalism the glasses were broken from Lennon's face. Paint has been daubed several times in different parts of the statue.

According to the newspaper, the town hall has now given up on repairing the statue following the numerous attacks.
