Why The NME Awards Was Even More Predictable Than The BRITS Add to My Fav Bands List Add to My Fav Bands List

Last week I explained why The BRITs have become a farce. To me awarding JLS for their outstanding year is like John Terry receiving Dad of the Year Award in 2008 – just wrong!

Well another awards ceremony and another predictable bore-fest. The NME Awards have proven themselves perhaps more predictable than the BRITS! Fan voted, in a completely symbiotic relationship the fans in question clearly voted for acts The NME plonks on their cover each week.

Kasabian and Muse carried home two gongs each and both bands will probably feel rather satisfied with their night’s work. They shouldn’t considering they've both just released the worst albums of their careers. Rather predictably the big sellers trounced home. What about Biffy Clyro’s ascension from paupers to kings? If you’re going to award the magazine’s best friends then why bother in the first place - last year I could barely move for Kasabian and Muse features in the NME!

And another thing – who could have guessed the winners of the Radar award? Surely not the band who appeared on the front cover of the ‘Tips for 2010’ edition? Oh sorry yep it was the Drums, again predictably!

How about best new band? Bombay Bicycle Club won. The same Bombay Bicycle Club who were on the NME tour? Oh yep that’ll be right. But fear not because the Big Pink romped home in the best track category with the utterly crap ‘Dominos’. With The Drums also winning that meant only the Maccabees off the tour missed out – if I were them I’d sue.

The Mighty Boosh also took home best DVD – hardly surprising really considering the trend we’ve already established. And if I’m being particularly picky I don’t really need the NME to remind me that the Jonas Brothers are an insult to the music industry – I would rather hope that’s obvious.

Even when they did surprise me they managed to give Paramore the best International band award over the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. which, if we’re honest, is a bit of a crime. In fact, it’s a 30 years in prison and locked up in isolation kind of crime.

I don’t know about you but I might go into hibernation when the Mercury Music Prize comes around for fear of this worrying trend continuing. What do you think?

  • JLS fully deserved all the credit they got..Who else do you think should have won the likes of best single? Cheryl Cole, who only mimes? They have worked harder than anyone they we're nominated against and deserved to be rewarded for this..

  • I'm not trying to be funny but who really cares about the NME Awards being predictable?

  • surely an awards ceremony that celebrates popular culture should be predictable? isn't that the point?

  • Not to repeat other comments here, but of course they give awards to people they feature in the magazine, that would be the demographic they aspire to please. Who did you really expect it to win? This article reads as if you believe NME has any credibility with regards to music - do you know anyone who buys/reads it? I think it's safe to say NME has been irrelevant for years, constantly backing lowest-common denominator music in the hopes of grabbing the largets market share they can.
