A museum dedicated to Michael Jackson is to be built in his hometown of Gary, Indiana.

Work is expected to begin on the $300million project, which has been backed by the late star’s father Joe, next year.

Gary's mayor, Rudy Clay, said that the museum would attract 750,000 visitors a year, and generate up to $150m for the local economy.

Jackson visited the town in 2003 to discuss construction plans, but work did not begin before his sudden death last June.

His father, Joe, told the Associated Press: “This is something that my family and Michael have always wanted. We're bringing something back."

It is hoped the site will feature The Jackson Family Museum and Hotel, as well as a performing arts centre.
